YouTube Watch Party: Privacy Policy

This policy covers both the browser extension and the Android app. Where they differ, the text says so.

The short version

The extension and the app synchronize YouTube playback between you and your friends. To do that, they relay playback state through our server while you are in a room. They do not collect analytics, do not track your browsing, do not show their own ads and do not sell anything to anyone. There are no accounts and no registration.

How the Android app works

The Android app (Watch Party) plays videos with the official YouTube embedded player, the YouTube IFrame Player API, and keeps the players of everyone in a room on the same moment. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to YouTube or Google.

• Every video is streamed by YouTube's own player, directly from YouTube to your phone. We do not proxy, download, cache, re-host or re-encode any video or audio.
• Ads shown by YouTube's player are never blocked, skipped, muted, hidden or shortened. When the host gets an ad, the room simply waits it out.
• Playback stops when you leave the app. There is no background playback, and the app does not unlock paid features or remove restrictions.
• There is no sign-in. The app never sees, handles or stores your Google or YouTube account.

YouTube API Services

The Android app uses YouTube API Services. It plays videos with the YouTube embedded player, and it asks YouTube for a video's title and thumbnail (YouTube's public oEmbed and image services) to show what a party is watching. These requests go from your phone straight to YouTube, which receives your IP address and the videos you watch, as it would from any website that embeds a YouTube video. How Google handles that information is described in the Google Privacy Policy. By using the app you agree to the YouTube Terms of Service.

The app does not use any YouTube API Services that require your authorization, and we do not access, collect or store any data from your YouTube or Google account.

What the extension and the app process

While you are in a watch party room, they exchange the following with the synchronization server (sync.mbplanes.com):

• Playback state of the current YouTube video: video id, position, play or pause, playback speed.
• The display name you typed in the panel, if any. It is visible to other members of your room and to nobody else.
• A random room code that identifies your room.
• A pass back into your room: a random secret the server hands each member, so that a phone that lost its connection (for example, after a moment in another app) can come back without being let in again. It is deleted with the room.
• Your IP address, as with any internet connection. It is used only for abuse protection (rate limiting) and appears in short-lived technical logs.

What we store

Nothing durable. Room state lives in server memory only while the room exists and is deleted the moment the last member leaves, or when the room is closed for inactivity. There is no database. Technical logs rotate and contain no viewing history.

What stays on your device

The extension keeps small local settings in your browser storage: your chosen display name, the current room, and a flag that you have seen the built-in instructions. The app keeps your display name, your captions choice, the videos you recently watched in parties (so you can start them again) and whether you have seen the introduction. In both cases these never leave your device except as described above, and they are removed when you uninstall. In the app you can also remove a video from the recent list at any time.

In the extension, your YouTube sign-in belongs to YouTube and to your browser. We never see it, never store it and have no access to it.

What we never do

• No analytics, no tracking pixels, no fingerprinting.
• No reading of your YouTube account, history or subscriptions.
• No collection of pages you visit. The extension runs only on youtube.com, and the app only plays the videos you choose.
• No blocking, skipping, muting or hiding of ads, and no interference with anything YouTube earns from.
• No downloading, saving or re-hosting of videos.
• No selling, renting or sharing of any data with third parties.

Security

All traffic between the extension or the app and the server uses encrypted connections (TLS). Room codes are long random secrets generated on the server, so uninvited guests cannot guess their way into your room.

Children

The extension and the app are not directed at children. As on YouTube itself, you need to be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age in your country) to use them.
