YouTube Watch Party: Privacy Policy

This policy covers both the browser extension and the Android app.
Where they differ, the text says so.
The short version
The extension and the app synchronize YouTube playback between you
and your friends. To do that, they relay playback state through our
server while you are in a room. They do not collect analytics, do not
track your browsing, do not show their own ads and do not sell anything
to anyone. There are no accounts and no registration.
How the Android app works
The app is a browser view of the ordinary YouTube website plus a
synchronization layer on top of it. It is not a media player of its
own and it is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to YouTube
or Google.
- Everything you watch is played by YouTube itself, on youtube.com,
in your own session and with your own account if you sign in. We do
not proxy, download, cache, re-host or re-encode any video or audio.
- Ads are never blocked, skipped, muted, hidden or shortened. When an
ad plays, the room simply waits it out, exactly as it would if you were
watching alone. The app deliberately keeps its hands off every part of
the page that belongs to advertising.
- The app does not unlock paid features, does not enable background
playback, does not remove restrictions and does not alter what YouTube
delivers to you.
- Inside the page the app adjusts only what a watch party needs: it
reads the current playback position, and while you are a guest in a
room it holds back playback controls so that the host leads. This is
the same kind of local, in-page adjustment that any browser extension
performs on the user's own device, at the user's own request, and it
takes effect only in the app.
What the extension and the app process
While you are in a watch party room, they exchange the following
with the synchronization server (sync.mbplanes.com):
- Playback state of the current YouTube video: video id, position,
play or pause, playback speed.
- The display name you typed in the panel, if any. It is visible to
other members of your room and to nobody else.
- A random room code that identifies your room.
- Your IP address, as with any internet connection. It is used only
for abuse protection (rate limiting) and appears in short-lived
technical logs.
What we store
Nothing durable. Room state lives in server memory only while the
room exists and is deleted the moment the last member leaves, or when
the room is closed for inactivity. There is no database. Technical
logs rotate and contain no viewing history.
What stays on your device
The extension keeps small local settings in your browser storage:
your chosen display name, the current room, and a flag that you have
seen the built-in instructions. The app keeps the same kind of small
settings on your phone. In both cases they never leave your device
except as described above, and they are removed when you uninstall.
If you sign in to your Google account, that sign-in belongs to
YouTube and to your device. We never see it, never store it and have
no access to it.
What we never do
- No analytics, no tracking pixels, no fingerprinting.
- No reading of your YouTube account, history or subscriptions.
- No collection of pages you visit. The extension runs only on
youtube.com, and the app opens only youtube.com.
- No blocking, skipping, muting or hiding of ads, and no interference
with anything YouTube earns from.
- No downloading, saving or re-hosting of videos.
- No selling, renting or sharing of any data with third parties.
Security
All traffic between the extension and the server uses encrypted
connections (TLS). Room codes are long random secrets generated on the
server, so uninvited guests cannot guess their way into your room.
